The Need for a New AI Paradigm

We live in the age of intelligent machines. The algorithms that power our world can pilot vehicles, diagnose diseases, and compose music with a skill that equals or exceeds human ability. The large language models (LLMs) that have captured the public imagination are a testament to the power of the current computing paradigm. Given a simple prompt, they can generate paragraphs of fluid, coherent text and synthesize vast amounts of information in seconds. They represent the triumphant culmination of a 70-year-old idea: that intelligence can be understood as a form of statistical computation.

This paradigm rests on a simple set of foundational assumptions inherited from a materialist worldview:

The world is data. Reality can be digitized into bits and bytes.
Intelligence is statistical correlation. Thinking is reducible to a

series of mathematical operations on that data.

Scale is the solution. With enough data and computational power, any

cognitive function can be mimicked.

This approach has brought us remarkably far. Deep learning has been spectacularly effective at high-dimensional pattern recognition. An LLM, fed a significant portion of the internet, learns the statistical relationships between words and can, therefore, predict the most probable next word in a sequence. The results are often indistinguishable from human output, and this has led to a belief that we are on a direct path to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

This book argues that this belief is an illusion born from a category error. We are on a path to an ever-more-sophisticated form of mimicry, not genuine intelligence. The limitations of the current paradigm are not issues of scale; they are fundamental, architectural flaws that reveal the deep chasm between statistical correlation and true understanding. They are the artifacts of building a mind on the physics of a dead universe.

The Three Walls of Statistical Intelligence
